Ildar Iksanov

Tell us about yourself.
My name is Ildar. I’m 22 and I’m from Moscow.  I’m a stylist at FOTT , the best menswear store in Russia.  Also, I play drums in a band called Trud. All of these things have helped me to make something new in my life. Making photos is very important for me, but it’s not necessary as it’s only hobby.

List some things that are beautiful to you.
Clothes, sneakers, drums, modern art, music, books, craft, buildings ,vintage, photography, people, and homeware.

What’s the story behind your first camera?
It was in those days when I loved going to parties and at some point, I realized that I wanted to capture moments at these parties. I was then very inspired by one friend, Sasha Mademuaselle. I got my first film camera, an Olympus 700 XB, and then got the Olympus MJu 2. Eventually, I threw out the whole thing. One day, I saw that one of my friend has Contax T2 and realized that’s what I needed.

Do you prefer digital or film?
I try shoot photos on digital cameras like the Canon G9, G10, and other G-series cameras. Right now, I want the Fuji X100.

What’s a day in the life of Ildar?
Boring! In the morning, I work, practice with the band, go home and sleep. To tell you the truth, my day starts with the idea that I should do something special, but I usually fall asleep again. I often stress in the morning that I shouldn’t be late to work. I love my job and only there can I realize my ideas.

If you had to choose a couple of images for someone who is looking at your portfolio for the first time, which would you select?
I’d have to choose this, this, and this. I don’t know why, but these are my favorite shots. I love clean pictures, but at the same time I like blurriness. These photos shows some movement – visible life.

With fashion week on people’s minds, we wonder: who are some designers on your radar, even if you can’t afford them?
I don’t like high fashion at all. I have some favorites brands that I like such as Engineered Garments, MHL, Needles, LVC, etc. The items of these brands will never be out of fashion; they will always be in need. All of this fashion shit is cyclical and everything is repeated, but some things remain eternal. In general, I feel closer to fashion that remains relevant, regardless of trends.

Tell us about your trip to Greece – what do you love about this country?
I liked everything . Let’s start by saying that Greece is very touristy country and there are various excursions that you can not escape. The food there is very tasty, as Greek cuisine is very diverse in its delicacies. I really love their grilled octopus, fish dishes, and of course their famous Greek Salad. As for the people, everyone is friendly and I was happy to discover that if you  need help, you will not be denied. I also enjoyed the beautiful architecture. I’m not talking about the ancient ruins and columns as I did not visit Athens, but rather about the small houses in the cities. And before I forget, you have to visit the beautiful island of Santorini.

Why did you title one of your series: “Not Ugly but Not Beautiful”?
I believe that beauty can be found as in ugliness and the ugliness of beauty.
